So you watched the live web cast, and immediately afterwards helped crashed the T-Mobile servers by continuously clicking on the G1 preorder option, and finally your first Android phone is on the way. With all that time on your hands between now and October 22, why not take a moment to consider what killer Android apps you plan to download first? One of the most exciting features about the Android OS is its location awareness capability, and therefore many of the most highly anticipated apps make use of this feature. What is this location awareness you ask? It’s actually a very simple concept. The phone (by virtue of GPS) always knows exactly where you are, and actively shares that information with your applications as well as other phones on the network (if you allow.)
One such app that takes advantage of this location awareness feature is Locale, a location savvy conditions manager for your Android powered phone. With Locale you can set location specific “situations” for which you want certain “conditions” to change on your phone. Going to the movies? Set up a situation based on the address of your movie theater, and Locale will put your phone on silent when you get there. Interestingly enough, Locale also offers a 3rd party development tool for its app which allows the addition of plug ins which promise to further enrich this already useful tool.
Location awareness has also changed the face of your contacts list for good. With Phonebook 2.0 your contact list becomes a social networking tool, linking and syncing you with your Android friends all over the country. This stalker friendly app constantly updates your contacts profiles with pertinent info (including current location) so you never have to be separated in a crowd again.
However, if its truly social networking (read bar hopping) that you are after, then you wont be able to live without Wertago. Wertago, an obvious similitude of “where to go,” is a venue driven social networking app designed to get you to the hottest spots in town, connect with your friends and party the night away. I can’t think of a more useful application than one that tell you where the closest bar is.
Let’s face it, after all that partying, you are probably going to need a cab, and Android can help with that too thanks to Cab4me. This application will allow you to instantly locate the nearest cab service to your current location. However it gets better; Cab drivers can also register via the cab 4 me website and accept orders from Android enabled clients making it possible for you to order a cab just by clicking a button on your G1. You won’t need to make a call or even know where you are for that matter, Cab4me will fill in all those pesky details for you!
The best part of this is that all of these are just a drop in the bucket of possible applications for the location awareness features of Google’s Android OS. The exciting part will be to see what comes next. |
