A second “me too” handset manufacturer joined the Android fray this week as the ZZZ Phone 2.0 officially becomes the second Android powered cell phone to hit the market since T-Mobiles October 22, release of the G1. The manufacturer, who only markets unlocked smart phones plans to ship the ZZZ 2.0 by November 30. ZZZ Phone, who bills themselves as the “Dell” of cell phone manufacturers (no ego problems here!) offers many customizable features available as upgrades to the base line phone. In addition to WIFI and GPS (which are not included in the base model) customers can also add custom logos, camera upgrades (up to a respectable 7mp camera) and waterproofing options all at additional cost. The phone color is customizable as well with 9 colors to choose from. The baseline phone however does pack some impressive features for the price including a sliding full QWERTY keyboard, touch screen, accelerometer, and 4 stereo speakers. An upgraded model including optional GPS and WIFI rings in at just around $237, quite a bit less that the G1 considering there is no 2 year contract. While ZZZ Phone 2.0 is the first such handset to follow the G1, it is unlikely to be the last and it is just the tip of a very large iceberg. Ultimately if cell phone manufacturers like this are successful, it could spell an end to contract subsidized phone purchases, effectively increasing the competition between carriers to untold levels and ultimately driving service prices down. All of that of course, remains to be seen. |
