The New York Times reported Friday that Google has released its own voice activated search for Iphone, downloadable for free through the Apple Itunes store. The application uses advanced speech recognition software which interprets the user’s vocal request, and passes it on to Google’s search engine. The results can be displayed in as little as a few seconds, depending on the network speed.
Google is not the only search engine to offer voiced based mobile services. Both Yahoo, and MSN currently offer voice activated search services as well. AT&T is also developing a voice recognition system that would employ Google to complete the interpreted searches. This latest initiative is only a small portion of Google’s wider exploration into speech recognition technology. Many Android advocates questioned Google’s decision to debut the new service on the Ipone rather than the T-Mobile G1. However, Google’s motivation is obvious. While T-Mobile is expected to sell just under 1 million G1’s by the end of this year, Apples sales of the Iphone will top out at over 11 million. |
