The Nikkei business daily reported on Wednesday that Japanese Open Handset Alliance Member NTT DoCoMo Inc. and their South Korean partner Korea Telecom Freetel have announced a cooperative effort to develop a handset using Google's Android platform with an expected launch sometime in 2009. DoCoMo owns a 10 percent stake in its Korean partner and the two have cooperated in that past on securing handsets in order to reduce costs.

DoCoMo hopes to capitalize on costs savings afforded by Google’s open sourced software. The company expects to be able to market the handset for around 20% less than comparable models using other operating systems, as a result of avoiding the costs associated with software development and licensing fees.

KTF has seen its share of innovations. In 2002, they were the first company to successfully broadcast via 3g technology, streaming the 2002 World Cup of soccer to mobile users. In 2007, they were the first company to offer mobile video calling, with the launch of their HSDPA service.
