Android's Open Handset Alliance Gains 14 Members Print

The Open Handset Alliance, the group of industry partners who are the driving force behind Google’s Android operating system has increased its membership by 14 members in the last few days.

 

The new members of the technology consortium include big names like Sony Ericson, Garmin and Toshiba just to name a few. A statement released by the alliance said in part:

"New members will either deploy compatible Android devices, contribute significant code to the Android Open Source Project or support the ecosystem through products and services that will accelerate the availability of Android-based devices."

Garmin, who has primarily produced personal GPS products, has been working towards the launch of its GPS-centered “Nuviphone”. Garmin has said that the phone is set to release early in 2009, but no concrete release dates have been set.
